In Everything,But Nowhere in You

Why doesn’t my heart understand? Why this waiting?

Why does it return again and again, suddenly, like rain on a monsoon afternoon? A sudden rush of happiness, like a kite slipping free and drifting out of sight.

Or perhaps, just a few fading moments before everything disappears into the cold darkness?

Like birds returning to their nests at dusk, your memories come back every day, quietly gathering around me.

You disappear with the daylight, then return as the darkness of night. A thousand memories, a little piece of waiting, and still, my heart understands yet never truly understands.

I hear you in the song of the wind. There you are.

I find you in the songs of birds, in the clouds drifting across the sky, in the stories of books, where you keep returning, again and again.

And the moment I open my eyes, you are gone.

You remain in the old messages on my phone, in the faded colours of old photographs. You are somewhere inside my heart too.

Only, you are no longer there in the way I can call you mine.

How many untold stories of mine have found their way into your story?

You remain in everything that is mine.

But in how much of yours do I remain?
